Tomato Talk

Updated: Mar 30, 2022

We are passionate about British tomatoes – the flavourful varieties, how they are grown in UK and new technological advances, such as drainwater nutrient recirculation in hydroponic systems, reduced energy inputs and LED lighting to name but a few.

UK Tomato Working Party (TWP)

As secretary of this very active group of Growers, I have the pleasure of organising the monthly visits to nusery sites and also managing the data sets, as provided by the members of the TWP.

Information on energy use, UK light levels, crop water requirements, labour data and crop yield profiles is provided, compared and distributed to the Grower members on a weekly basis.

The nursery visits comprise a morning business meeting, where data sets are examined and crop performance attributes are discussed, followed by a crop walk.

Nursery crop hygiene is paramount during the visits and all Growers wear protective clothing to reduce the risk of spread of pest, disease or virus organisms from site to site.

Visits to nurseries growing crops other than tomatoes also feature, particularly if there has been investment in new glasshouse units, equipment or growing techniques. In addition, there is an opportunity to visit nurseries and research establishments overseas, as part of an autumn visit schedule.

Contact with new Growers and potential new members is always welcome.
