Vertical growing space may be utilised more efficiently by the installation of intensive hydroponic systems.
One such example is afforded by Saturn Bioponics (see photographs). The images show recently planted pak choi plugs growing in rockwool in the Saturn Grower system.
Hydroponic solution is introduced at the top of the columns and moves downwards, through the rockwood, to collection points at the base of the towers. Drainwater may be collected and recirculated within the system.
Such intensive systems may increase yields by up to 3.5 times per unit of land. Leafy salads, oriental veg, strawberries, edible flowers and some herbs have been successfully grown in the Saturn Bioponics system, other crops may also be suitable – such as high value leafy greens and dwarf/compact fruiting crops.
